Barriletes Gigantes

Buen dia familia de Plato!

Our dia de los muertos is long gone, but our kids in Plato Academy are still in the spirit of celebrating with more fun activities about the day of the dead. It came as such a surprise for me, when they kept asking to make more Calaveras every time they’d find me in the halls or the lunch room. Every day, a different child expressed interest on making more Calaveras. So I decided to incorporate once again the activities for the holiday just for one more day. We made the clay Calaveras, and colored paper calaveras.

With the oldest class, we talk some more about the amazing Guatemalan celebration they do on November 2nd. We watched a short video were they could see the huge dimensions of the barriletes/kites that they patiently make by hand. We learned about the time that they all take out of their daily lives to create this giants; some of them, depending on the size, can take up to 5 months to create! This flying art are created to carry messages to their ancestors the Mayans. We also learned that the designs can take a political view in order to make a statement to their government.  What a form to celebrate and respect their loved ones in such a creative way. I finally left them with a question: How do you remember your loved ones?

I introduced the Christmas song for this year’s program: “Navidad Rock”, which is the Spanish version of Jingle Bells. https://youtu.be/4NWhv0ihucM We are having fun learning it, and can’t wait to hear the whole sch0ol singing it.

Hasta pronto/ see you soon!
